Whitaker Wind Sculptures at the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens

The Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden is a massive and lush oasis in Texas, featuring an impressive collection of plants and meticulously designed gardens. In 2017 and 2018, the arboretum hosted a killer exhibit of wind sculptures, created by the renowned artist, Lyman Whitaker.

Whitaker, a master of wind sculpture for over 30 years, teamed up with Paul Dorrell, the owner of Leopold Gallery, to create this incredible exhibition. The Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden commissioned the dynamic duo to create an exhibit that would take visitors’ breath away, and boy did they deliver! The exhibit consisted of 140 sculptures, perfectly placed throughout the gardens to create a mind-blowing and unforgettable experience.

The wind sculptures themselves were awe-inspiring, each one crafted by hand and designed to move gracefully with the slightest breeze. They were constructed from a variety of metals, including copper and stainless steel, and varied in size from a few feet to towering structures up to 30 feet high. Some were intricate and complex, with multiple moving parts that spun and twisted in the wind, while others were simple yet elegant.

Visitors were absolutely enchanted by the sculptures, which seemed to come alive as the wind swept through the gardens. Some sculptures moved slowly and gracefully, while others whirled around at lightning speeds, creating a mesmerizing blur of motion. The sound of the wind rustling through the sculptures added to the overall sensory experience, imparting a sense of calm and tranquility to the gardens.
